Day One: During this Weekend Immersion Workshop in classical mosaic techniques we will start with a short overview of the various methods, approaches and possibilities of mosaic making. We will then consider the tools, substrates and materials used for mosaics before focusing on the classical mosaic techniqes of the art including the 'rules' of laying and andamento, the idea of the internal flow or movement of the tesserae. You will then make a small practice piece to become familiar with these concepts before you begin work on your own 25cm square mosaic using the direct method with glue.

In this workshop we will be using vitreous glass and Winkelman’s unglazed ceramic tiles and you will choose from a selection of pre-prepared templates based on ancient designs or one of your own to which you can apply the same classical 'rules'.

Day Two: You will continue working on your plaque with the aim of completing your mosaic. The work will need time to dry so the workshop will end with a grouting demonstration and you will take home a small bag of grout and instructions to finish the mosaic at home.

What’s included: Tools and equipment, ceramic and vitreous glass tiles, bases, adhesives and course notes.

What to bring: An apron or big shirt and a shallow box to take your work home. There will be tea, coffee and wrapped biscuits on offer throughout the weekend but due to Covid, it is recommended that you bring your own travel mug.
