A one-day workshop to give you the essential skills needed to make a beautiful mosaic abstract using found and salvaged materials. No previous experience necessary. Class size is limited to four to comply with Covid safety regulations.

Subjects covered: building your own substrate, mosaic tools, cutting and laying techniques and installing your completed work.

This workshop will explore different mosaic materials which can easily be salvaged or collected to make beautiful abstract pieces. Whether it’s pebbles and shells, broken pottery, bolts and washers, Scottish slate, beach glass, bottle tops, beads, single use plastics, or even organic elements like nuts and seeds, we will delve into the fascinating world of mosaic materials.

We will begin with a brief overview of mosaics and take a look at the the various methods, approaches and possibilities of the medium before focusing on gathered and found materials. We will be using the direct tile adhesive method and you will learn how to build your own substrate and the various cutting techniques needed to make your own mosaics before considering design ideas and getting stuck in.

The idea is to play and experiment and there will be the opportunity to make as many mosaics as you like, trying out different colours, textures and patterns to achieve striking effects.

We will end the day with a demonstration of how to install your mosaics at home on an outdoor or indoor wall or onto a movable plaque.

The cost of this workshop is £75 per person.

What’s included: A selection of mosaic materials, bases of various sizes, adhesives and course notes.

What to bring: Mosaic materials that you would like to include in your work. An apron or big shirt – it’s messy work! – and a shallow box to take your work home. Due to Covid, we will not be able to offer teas and coffees but please bring your own reusable mug and you are welcome to use the kettle.

COVID-19: The number of students will be limited to four in order to ensure Covid-safe distancing, students will be required to wear visors and each student will have use of their own sanitised tools.
