Draw design weave for double cloth.

  • PickOne Coburg House Art Studios Leith United Kingdom (map)

How does one arrive at constructing a woven cloth, where do weavers get their ideas from?

This class has been designed for those who wish to give their woven work context from self generated imagery, specifically looking at how one translates the draw mark into a woven fabric and for this class, specifically a double cloth structure.

This 10 day workshop will begin by exploring mark making/drawing through building up surfaces through combinations of colour, utilising a variety of non traditional techniques combined with traditional mark making to produce individual collections of imagery, which will then be a source of inspiration to design and produce ones own double cloth fabric.

Please note this class is about about understanding the structure of a double cloth, as well as translating the hand drawn mark into a double cloth and not necessarily about having a completed length of fabric, although time will be given over to complete as much as possible in the two weeks.

  • Day one - Mark making.

  • Day two - Design development through collage and further mark making.

  • Day three - Designing warps through yarn choices.

  • Day four - Constructing your warp/dressing the loom.

  • Day five - Constructing your warp/dressing the loom.

  • Day six/day ten - Weaving your cloth

This workshop will suit those who have a firm knowledge of weaving and who would like to broaden their portfolio of weave structures, whilst gaining an understanding in translating ideas from the paper to cloth, specifically double cloth.

All materials and equipment are provided as part of the fee and students will use a 16 shaft hand loom to construct their hand woven cloth.

Maximum number of students 3 with 2 students required to make the class run.
